WEEK 7 "My Esaay Topic"

5. "If I quote something you said to me over breakfast while I'm at lunch, there's no copyright violation. But if I copy something you posted to your blog and put it into my blog, I potentially violate your exclusive rights to control copying, adaptation, display and performance of your 'work'" (Doctorow, Cory, 2007. "Creative Commons." Locus Magazine. November. Available: http://www.locusmag.com/Features/2007/11/cory-doctorow-creative-commons.html).

Considering the ease of copying in the digital environment, are copyright laws still relevant? Are they a necessary way of protecting an artist's intellectual property, or are they an impediment to artistic creation? Critically discuss this conflict with reference to academic writing on the topic.
